Enjoy some of the best views in Bernal Heights
Bernal Heights is surrounded by views, given the fact that it overlooks the San Francisco skyline. There are many delicious restaurants within the district and nearby in Noe Valley. The main attraction of the region is Bernal Heights Park which allows one to look over the whole city. Many San Franciscans never travel to Bernal Heights, as it is located on the southern edge of Mission Valley, and is served by only a few city bus lines and is perched atop a steep hill.. Those who do wander up the incline may be surprised by this quaint urban village that seems forgotten by time. The main shopping strip of Cortland Avenue is populated by small markets, cafes, fruit stands and barber shops. The residential streets are a cluster of diminutive bungalows and community gardens. The neighborhood consists of a bastion of artists and progressives, popular with the lesbian community, and attractive to young families looking their first home in a quiet part of town. It is also a mecca for dog owners, thanks to a high con centration of single-family houses with backyards. T his district survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, thanks to the hill's bedrock foundation. World War II brought an influx of people who came to work in the naval shipyards of nearby China Basin. During the dot-com boom, the community got "discovered" and its affordable, offbeat charm soon gave way to gentrification. Many of the homes in the area now start at the $2,000,000 mark. With easy access to the Silicon Valley via the 280 and 101 freeways, Bernal Heights is particularly attractive to first time home buyers in the tech industry.
